[Faces] RMK Make-up Maestro Mr. Masaaki Abe (Japan) Believes In Natural Beauty

RMK brochure chat withRMK makeup bookletsTruly excited I was to be able to have a face-to-face chat with the make-up professional himself, Mr. Masaaki Abe (all the way from Japan!) for RMK. Of course, with the help of our friendly interpreter, Mr. Cheong and the kind arrangement by Minda from RMK Malaysia.*_^

RMK is a Japanese brand which has its roots within the New York make-up artistry, but focuses on bringing across its cosmetics and skincare products from the laboratories in Japan itself. With RMK’s philosophy of “Revealing the best and most beautiful you!”, Mr. Masaaki talked to me recently what he thinks of make-up and what beauty truly means to him. Calm, collected, very soft spoken and well-mannered, Mr. Masaaki, in all black, is actually very friendly and answers all the questions I threw at him, with great ease and passion. I could tell his deep rooted love for the art itself. Perhaps it’s the RMK products which he has been using (he has been with RMK for more than 4 years now), his face is glowing and has a skin as smooth as a baby! (Really, no joke ^_^). I quickly asked him which is his favourite skincare product from RMK, he gladly revealed to me (will let you in the secret at the end of this post, be patient). This is what we talked about (in essence of course, as we spoked a great deal that beautiful day!)

How did you get involved with beauty and make-up? Well, it was way back in my high school time. Whenever I was free, I would love to see how women put on their make-up, and eventually, I went onto making women beautiful by doing their make-up! It is the joy of seeing women shine beautifully, after applying make-up that I realized this was where I want to be – to make each and every woman feel beautiful, in their own way. It makes me happy to see them happy.

RMK BoardsWhat does the RMK brand stand for? RMK is a strong believer in natural beauty and enhancing a women’s beauty through our cosmetics, our brand has that very New York feel, current and fresh but with a Japanese approach to make-up. We are famous for our base make-up and natural finishing products, among others.

What’s the uniqueness of the latest RMK Autumn/Winter 2013 Make-up Collection? With this palates, we focus on the eye make-up. The texture is very smooth, creamy with strikingly mute earthy colours but also very wearable and easy to blend with the pearl-like ingredients in the shadows. You don’t have to be a professional to apply and still achieve the polished look. It is also about layering those colours together to create a harmonious effect for your eyes. Finish the look with a hint of pink blush and lipstick with glossy lip gloss and that’s all you need to look pretty. Of course, load up with our award-winning mascara to complete the look!

RMK masaaki in session7Due to the Korean trend, it is such a huge impact that Korean make-up has on women today, how is Japanese make-up different from the Korean make-up? Korean make-up tend to focus on creating the cat-eye look, and very glowing skin, for Japanese, you will notice that Japanese girls like to make their eyes look BIG (simply because we Japanese men love big eyes girls) with eye make-up and put on a more pinky rosy cheeks. As for the face, it is more with a natural finish. Then again, make-up is very personal, it is about your own creative expression. There is no right or wrong to it.

RMK products collageI was told by some make-up artists that BB cream may not be a good thing for everyone. Is that so? First of all, one must understand the function of a BB cream. It is a combination of skincare and make-up product in one. Of course, it is convenient to just use one product to prepare your face, and cut down your make-up time, but we believe that your skin needs a protective barrier after your skincare application, before your make-up, so that your make-up can also stay on longer. Applying a thin layer of base before your actual foundation application is an important step.

I have combination skin and make-up tend to not last long, how do I overcome such predicament? Well, you are living in a humid and tropical place, there is no such foundation or make-up that will last hours and hours without needing any sort of touch up at all. You will just need to be a little “hardworking” and do some minor touch-up here and there, as and when you need to.

What is beauty, to you, as a make-up artist? Beauty? There is no absolute beauty in life. It is the little imperfection in you that makes you beautiful. Like how RMK believes, let your natural beauty shine through, with the little help of make-up. That is beauty to me. Don’t go all out of your way to be perfectly beautiful. That is not beauty.

If you were not a make-up artist today, what would you be? Wow, that’s a good question… (he thought and thought hard for quite a while) Seriously, I have never thought about it that way. I guess I would still be a make-up artist, one way or the other. (He ended that with a grin on his charming-looking face)

That thought of Mr. Masaaki on beauty really hit a chord in me. Honestly, I was like a novice and a humble student trying to learn as much as possible from the expert. Mr. Masaaki was never weighed down by my seemingly endless questions! In fact, he answered them all with such enthusiasm and seriousness that I truly admire and appreciate (for spending his time with me). I guess the best thing I got out of talking with him, is that not taking make-up too seriously and just embrace the best part of me. It was such fun talking to him. Thanks again! Sensei! Arigato, Abe San.

Oh right, I almost forgot. This is his secret to “almost”-perfect-looking skin (now we  know!). If you would like to know more about his tips and tricks to achieving a dewy look, do check out my previous RMK workshop post here. For more on RMK, do check out their website here.

Magic is real and dreams are made of these! The moment I stepped foot into this gallery, it took my breathe away, and a petite and beautiful bridal/wedding gown designer Celest Thoi, also my long time friend back in those days when we shot for mifa fashion forward TV show greeted me. Immediately, she invited me in with her sweetest of smile and we launched into talks and catching up session at her cozy earthy sofa right in the middle of this well lit space of  hers at Publika, Solaris Dutamas. We spoke about what she has been up to and conversations trailed into a blissful Friday afternoon.

I simply adore the set-up of your boutique. How did it come about, Celest? Well, it was love at first sight, Jenn. When I first saw this space, I instantly fell in love with it and felt like, this is it. We started from scratch, from the concept, design, right down to the little details. I came up with everything and my designer put all of my thoughts into reality. A great job indeed (I was marveling over the drop down lighting fixtures hanging from up above) She then continued. I wanted that LOFT feel to my gallery, hence the dark walls, the cozy ambience with the lightings, the sofa. The rest, I would like to leave it to my gowns to speak for themselves. (They do stand out indeed against this deep woody space and speak volume).CT Space6CT Space4CT Space5

What do you have in mind when you design your gowns? It is always what the client’s want because this is their special day after all! I would love to make them beautiful. I also put into considerations what sort of wedding the bride and groom will be throwing. For instance, is it a garden wedding, a beach wedding, a pool side, a hotel? This will help when I design for my clients. Of course, materials used too.CT gown1CT gown2CT Space7

How did you get into this business? Well, I was in Australia (that was where I met my husband) and then in New Zealand (where I took up courses). It all started when I was preparing for my own wedding. I really enjoyed  the whole process of it, from designing my own wedding gown, to preparing for the entire occasion. Even after the wedding, I was still pretty excited about it. I thought to myself, since I loved it so much, why don’t I go into it myself? That was how it started, and like most people say, the rest is history.

So what sort of materials you usually work with? I love french lace, tulle, silk, satin, details, embellishments like pearls and what not. I love the details of it.CT gown6CT gown7CT gown10CT gown5CT gown4

How do you describe your style, that distinctively Celest Thoi gown? (Celest grins underneath her straight banks and long hair before she answers). Three words – Timeless, Simple and Elegant. These are the foundation of my creations. I always keep these in mind as I would love my clients to have a timeless yet whimsical and dreamy feel to their wedding gowns, each piece is specially designed and made and it will not be overly weighed down by too much details that are distracting but dainty and simple. That is my style. I specialize in made-to-measure bespoke wedding gowns to fit all occasions. We do rent-out our gowns as well since I started my boutique here.CT gown12CT gown26CT gown15CT gown18

Stay luminous and fabulous, and HAPPY always! Have a magical weekend ahead.

[Faces] The Fashion Forward Designer, Jimmy Lim (Part 2)

The peppermint tea was still simmering, my conversation with Jimmy continued. It was a relaxing Sunday afternoon after all. What’s important in the process of making clothes? Jenn, believe it or not, sampling is actually crucial. It’s like your prototype. … Continue reading

[Instagram] A week of reflection

ImageContemplating and looking at how new things have come along, and how I can re-work on on-going things to bring it to another level. Life is strange, perhaps one needs to let go a little to see what new discoveries will come back. Maybe holding on too tight is not a good thing after all. Let it flow… like water, my friend. That was what Bruce Lee said in his interview in a Discovery Channel documentary called I AM BRUCE LEE (Love it!). I love this guy, I love his passion for life, I love his style, his confidence and most of all, I love his intellectuality and his determination to succeed and be a better person, each day. He is now, my new HERO. I salute you, Bruce Lee. No wonder, you are such a legend as your spirit lives on, till this day. Fighting, Jenn!

Have a magical week ahead, my friends *_^Image

The many faces of Jimmy Lim, the award-winning fashion designer and my dear friend. Hugs and kisses *_^

Over a hot cup of peppermint tea at CoffeeStain by Joseph (here for more) at Parkamaya on a cosy Sunday afternoon, I sat down with my fashion designer friend, Jimmy Lim, after so many years. You know, at times, you have friends whom you only get a chance to meet once in a blue moon (or bumped into occasionally), yet, each time your encounter with them, it hit a deep chord in your heart and you can just picked up from where you left off, no fuss, no elaborate mundane chats, but real talks, and you are “old friends”, all over again, just that simple. I have a few of such friends and Jimmy is definitely one of them. We first met way back in 2007, when we were fresh out, just started our own production company, PATJENN FILM, and mifa8 Fashion Forward was our very first TV Program that we had the pleasure to work on, and that was where I met Jimmy. Co-incidentally, that was also his very first Malaysian come-back fashion show that he did, for he has long since resided and established a name in New Zealand with his self titled fashion label, and has already won many internationally acclaimed awards then! We hit it off straightaway and talked about anything and everything. Here are some snippets of our conversation:

How was it being back here in Malaysia now? It’s been crazy busy, one thing after another, Jenn! First the move from New Zealand, then comes the KLIF (Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2013), Fahrenheit88 Pop-up Store right after, and now my new outlet opening at Parkamaya! I have also started stocking up at Bangsar Telawi 2, can you believe it? Things happened so fast since I came back. It’s crazy busy but nice kinda crazy. (He has a huge grin on his still boyish-looking face).ImageImageWhat made you decide to come back, really? Gosh, you know I have been based in New Zealand for the longest time, I love it there, honestly. It has been great but travelling back and forth between these two places, gradually takes a toll on me. I am neither here, nor there. At times, it’s hard for people to reach me. We are, in a very people oriented kind of business, your clients, your media friends, they all need to be interacting with you, it’s your personal touch and service that matter,  so I decided it’s time for me to come back to Malaysia. As you age, Jenn, your heart seems to yearn for something more meaningful, and one of it , is being back home to your roots, closer to your culture. Funny enough though, it was that one odd incident that pushed me to actually make that shift in mind. (What was that? My eyes wide opened. I was so excited to find out what actually made Jimmy come to that life-turning point decision he recently made) It was when I was watching this Singaporean movie by Michelle Chong, called ALREADY FAMOUS. One of the scenes, the old lady character said, “If you don’t get to do what you love, what would be the meaning of life? And Longevity will be utterly meaningless”. It struck me, at that instant. How true! It triggered me to just follow my heart, to come back to Malaysia, to be in Asia. Partly, it also has to do with Dato Jimmy Choo, whom I met few years back in London. He was the first person who told me, I should bring my business and beyond, expand it in Asia! That was what I remembered. Now, I am back here, and I have never been happier. ImageImageWhat does the Jimmy Lim brand represent? There are three elements to my design. It is always functional, with added elements of tradition and sportiness. I have always believed that fashion has to be function and wearable. To me, fashion is not real until it is worn. Fashion has to make sense to people on the streets, people who are living their lives and people who are, ultimately your clients wearing your designs and clothes. That’s crucial for me. It only make sense. Having said that, I do have high admiration for designers who make couture their fashion vision. I absolutely salute that part of the passion, totally!

Our chat went onto something more personal, at times wicked, but never boring. Stay tuned to this space for part 2 of our peppermint tea conversation! For more of Jimmy’s award-winning work and background, do check out the official website here.

Stay luminous and be fabulous! You can get your fix of Jimmy’s high casual ready to wear pieces now @ Parkkayama, Fahrenheit88, 3rd Floor and SeeThrough Concept Store at Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar. Happy shopping!
